<h1 class="ql-align-center">World Migration Report 2022</h1> <h2>Context:</h2> <ul><li>Recently, the&nbsp;International Organization for Migration (IOM)&nbsp;launched its flagship&nbsp;World Migration Report 2022.</li></ul> <h2>About:</h2> <ul><li>The World Migration Report (WMR) is IOM’s flagship publication, having been&nbsp;produced biennially since 2000.&nbsp;</li></ul> <ul><li>It brings into focus the displacement and migration caused by climate change-induced factors, like extreme disasters and weather events.</li></ul> <h2>Key Findings:</h2> <ul><li>The recent report highlights that more people are being displaced by changing climate-related disasters than conflicts and violence, reversing a historical trend.</li></ul> <ul><li class="ql-indent-1">Historically, conflicts and violence have been the biggest trigger for new displacement.</li></ul> <ul><li>Most of the new displacement is due to climate-related events:</li></ul> <ul><li class="ql-indent-1">Storms accounted for 14.6 million displacements</li><li class="ql-indent-1">Floods for 14.1 million displacements</li></ul> <ul><li>Extreme temperatures have displaced some 46,000 people, droughts caused the new displacement of 32,000 people in 2020.</li></ul> <ul><li>The last World Migration Report, published in December 2019 in 2018, of the total new 28 million internally displaced people in 148 countries, 61 percent were due to disasters.</li></ul> <ul><li>In 2020, India, China, Mexico, the Philippines, and Egypt were the top five remittance recipient countries.</li></ul> <ul><li>The Philippines experienced the highest absolute numbers of new disaster displacements in 2020</li></ul> <ul><li>In comparison,&nbsp;the share of international migrants is relatively small in Asia and Africa (1.8% and 1.9%, respectively) and Latin America and the Caribbean (2.3%).</li></ul> <ul><li>The current United Nations global estimate is that there were around 281 million international migrants in the world in 2020, which equates to 3.6 percent of the global population.</li></ul> <h2>International Organization for Migration (IOM) :</h2> <ul><li>IOM is an intergovernmental organization established in 1951, that provides services and advice concerning migration to governments and migrants, including internally displaced persons, refugees, and migrant workers.&nbsp;</li></ul> <ul><li>Its headquarters is in Grand-Saconnex, Switzerland.</li></ul> <ul><li>IOM works in the four broad areas&nbsp;of migration management:</li></ul> <ul><li class="ql-indent-1">Migration and development</li><li class="ql-indent-1">Facilitating migration</li><li class="ql-indent-1">Regulating migration</li><li class="ql-indent-1">Forced migration.</li></ul> <ul><li>It has 173 member states with 8 states holding observer status.</li></ul> <ul><li>In September 2016, IOM became a related organization of the United Nations.</li></ul>
