<h1 class="ql-align-center">Eastern Swamp Deer</h1> <h2>Context:</h2> <ul><li>The population of the vulnerable eastern swamp deer, extinct elsewhere in South Asia, has dipped (from 907 in 2018 to 868 in 2020 ) in the Kaziranga National Park.</li></ul> <h2>About:</h2> <ul><li>The swamp deer also called barasingha is a deer species distributed in the Indian subcontinent.</li></ul> <ul><li>In Assamese, barasingha is called dolhorina, dol meaning swamp.</li></ul> <ul><li>Barasingha is found in open forests and grasslands of India and Nepal </li></ul> <ul><li>Formerly more widespread, the barasingha is now found only in scattered areas and in national parks and reserves </li></ul> <ul><li>There are three subspecies of Barasingha found in India </li></ul> <ul><li class="ql-indent-1">Wetland Barasingha - The largest among all the swamp deer of India</li></ul> <ul><li class="ql-indent-1">Hardground Barasingha (Rucervus duvaucelii branderi)</li></ul> <ul><li class="ql-indent-1">Eastern Barasingha - The smallest of Barasinghas</li></ul> <ul><li>Eastern Barasingha is endemic to Kaziranga and is not the primary prey of the park’s carnivores, primarily the tiger.
