<h1 class="ql-align-center"><strong style="color: rgb(230, 0, 0);">Dawoodi Bohra Community</strong></h1><p class="ql-align-center"><br></p><h3><strong>Context&nbsp;</strong></h3><ul><li class="ql-indent-1">A <strong>Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court,</strong> referred to a larger Bench of nine judges, a series of petitions challenging the authority of Dawoodi Bohra community leaders to excommunicate their members.</li><li class="ql-indent-1">The five judge Bench was dealing with the question whether the practice of excommunication in the Dawoodi Bohra community could continue as a “protected practice” despite the coming into force of the<strong> Maharashtra Protection of People from Social Boycott (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act of 2016.</strong></li></ul><h3><br></h3><h3><strong>﻿About&nbsp;</strong></h3><ul><li class="ql-indent-1">The Dawoodi Bohras are members of the <strong>Shia sect of Islam.&nbsp;</strong></li><li class="ql-indent-1">Their religious leader, known as the Al-Dai-Al-Mutlaq, is based in India.&nbsp;</li><li class="ql-indent-1">For over 400 years, the leader has been based out of India, including the current and 53rd leader, His Holiness Dr Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin.</li><li class="ql-indent-1">The Bohra community leader can excommunicate its members for challenging his authority.&nbsp;</li><li class="ql-indent-1">An excommunicated member is denied access to the community mosque or any burial in the community.&nbsp;</li><li class="ql-indent-1">The main language of the community is<strong> Lisan al-Dawat, a dialect of Gujarati</strong> with inclusions from <strong>Arabic and Urdu.</strong></li><li class="ql-indent-1">The Dawoodi Bohra community have inherited a distinguished heritage and rich historical legacy which traces to the Fatimi imams.</li><li class="ql-indent-1">Fatimi imams are direct descendants of the Prophet Mohammed through Imam Ali bin Abi Talib, son in law of the Prophet, and Fatima, daughter of the Prophet.</li></ul><p class="ql-align-center"><br></p><h1 class="ql-align-center"><strong>PRELIMS NOTES:</strong><a href="https://sunyaias.in/notes/prelims-2023" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 102, 204);"><strong>CLICK HERE</strong></a></h1>
